2015 World Alpine Ski Championships

Today is the day we have all been waiting for so eagerly here in the high country. The 2015 FIS World Alpine Ski Championships are finally returning to the United States, and better yet, right in Vail, Colorado for the first time in 16 years!

This event was first held in Murren, Switzerland during February of 1931. In 1950 the Championships traveled outside of Europe for the first time to the beautiful mountain of Aspen, Colorado. Since 1950, The United States have hosted the event 4 times in New York, California, and here in Colorado. When the Championships were last held in 1999 at Vail mountain we generated the largest crowd in US ski racing history.

Between Monday, February 2nd and Sunday, February 14th there will be a ton of great events taking place around Vail, Beaver Creek, and Avon. There will be a variety of skiing events every day that you can watch free of charge. Some events include Men and Women's Slalom Racing, Downhill Racing, the Korbell Charity Cup, The Nations Team Event, and more. One of the most interesting races will be the Korbell Legends Race. The best skiers in the world, from former Olympians to World Cup Champions, will compete head-to-head to show the world that they still have what it takes. This event will take place on Wednesday, February 11th from 1:30 pm to 4 pm at the Golden Peak Stadium on Vail mountain.

Aside from the historic skiing that will take place over the next two weeks, there will be tons of great activities for both the adults as well as the kids. World famous brewery Sierra Nevada will be hosting a Winter Beer Camp every afternoon for the adults. They will be showing off the official beer of the World Championships, the Start House Ale. The Start House Ale is described as the perfect beverage after good day on the slopes. A beverage that is high in flavor but refreshing at the same time. Along with the official FIS World Championship Ale, Sierra Nevada will be serving a variety of different beers, including the brand new Nooner Pilsner and forthcoming Beer Camp Hoppy Lager.

During the next two exciting weekends there will be an event taking place called "Pete and Earl's KIds Fun Zone." This event will take place at the gorgeous Lionshead Village in Vail, Colorado. Each day will host a different theme to engage the children in exciting activities. There will be fun workshops to help educate the whole family on different aspects of the tournament and skiing overall. These events will be sponsored by Blue Creek Productions and Holy Cross Energy to provide a fun and educational environment for both kids and the whole family.

Along with our adult happy hour and kids fun time, there will be a plethora of free concerts in Avon and Vail. Each day will start out with a free concert on the main street mall in Avon from 3 pm - 5 pm. Every afternoon the free concert series will continue in the Vail Village starting at 7 pm. All of these free concerts will be held outside so grab a hot chocolate and dress warm!  Some of the acts include the Groovetrotters, Matisyahu, O.A.R., Michael Franti & Spearhead, Hell's Belles, and Ceelo Green!

So you must be wondering.. How the heck do we get from Keystone to Vail?! If you have a vehicle it is a very easy and extremely gorgeous 45 minute drive along I-70. If you do not have a vehicle or just want to sit back with the family we have multiple options for you.
