For some of the best food and beer in Summit County go to Pug Ryan’s Brewery! Pug’s has been a staple restaurant in Dillon for years and it never disappoints. We have been eating at Pug’s for over 20 years and are faithful customers. The atmosphere is fun and relaxing and the staff has great customer service. They have the best burgers and fresh microbrews! If you are a non-meat eater they have fish, veggie lasagna, soups, and salads. My favorite is the pan-fried trout with a Moscow Mule. My husband loves the meatloaf, with the Pack Iron Pale Ale, and my kids would eat the french fries and mac and cheese every day if I let them.
We stay in Keystone and it is fun to come to Dillon for a night and have dinner at Pug’s and see the ice castles or go bowling. They have a wonderful open fireplace inside that is perfect to warm up next to on a chilly winter evening! Our lodging company, SummitCove also has a coupon for Pug Ryan’s for a free pint of beer in their Key to Keystone Coupon Book! Pug’s also has a great happy hour, which is Monday – Friday from 2-6pm. Appetizers are half off, wine and well drinks are only $4.00 and pints are only $2.00! You will not find these prices in Keystone. So there is always a reason to go to eat and drink at Pug’s. I just wish they were also open for lunch. They open at 2 pm every day. If you are looking to try some Colorado craft beer during your visit to Keystone, grab one of their flights so you can try a variety of their great beer!
Pug’s also has a great deck, with amazing views, to sit on in the summer. Also in the summer Pug Ryan’s runs the Tiki Bar on Lake Dillon. If you have never experienced the Tiki Bar you have to go! Again, great happy hour deals and yummy mixed drinks and food. Nothing beats having a cocktail and food right on the lake in a fun, lively atmosphere! Whether it be winter or summer Pug’s is a great place to eat and drink!
Gateway Grocery and Liquor may be a small store, but they have everything you need for a quick getaway weekend at Keystone Ski Resort! From toiletries to specialty salad dressings, they have it all. They carry everything including milk, eggs, lunch meat, frozen pizzas and tons of snacks. They have a great selection of wine from all over the world and a large selection of Colorado craft beers. You can get your food and alcohol all in one place, and even better, they are located just down the way from SummitCove’s check-in office at The Gateway Lodge on Highway 6!
They are conveniently located next to SummitCove’s check-in desk, so if you forgot your toothbrush or need a snack before you head to the condo, you can do it all in one stop. They are typically open from 9am-8pm, but their hours do vary. Gateway Grocery also offers grocery and liquor delivery. They will stock your refrigerator before you arrive at your condo! We plan on using this service on our next trip to Keystone. If you don’t want to make a big grocery store trip, we highly recommend just heading to Gateway Grocery to stock up on groceries for your vacation. All SummitCove guests will receive a coupon for discounted groceries in the Key to Keystone coupon book. Save money and time and head to Gateway Grocery!
I often find myself wincing at tourists in the grocery stores while shopping at my local grocery store in Summit County. Since I’m not a Colorado Native, I know the feeling of being in a new place, unfamiliar or just unaware to its rules and cultures, so I thought I’d clue you in regarding the rules of alcohol sales before your next ski vacation in Colorado. When you are visiting our fine state and hitting up the grocery store to stock your ski condo’s fridge, you might see the beer in the fridges and think ‘How convenient!’ With a closer look you might wonder, ‘Where is the wine and booze, it’s just beer?’ What you may not know is that Colorado has a law that requires grocery and convenience stores to sell only ‘3.2 Beer’, which is a beer of less than 3.2 percent alcohol by weight or 4.0 percent alcohol by volume; some describe it as lower strength or watered down. Wine and liquor are sold only in the liquor stores, along with the regular strength beer. This may not be a big deal to you, but it’s certainly nice to be aware of what you are buying. Some tourists are honestly probably better off with the lower strength beer anyways since it is being consumed at altitude and has heavier effects than usual. We recommend taking it slow and always drinking alot of water during your stay in the high country.
If you are a craft beer lover, you are definately going to want to go to a liquor store because the selection will be so much better. You will be pleased to see how many amazing craft beer options Colorado produces, from lagers to IPAs to sours or browns! The good news is that most grocery stores conveniently have a liquor store right next door, so you really only need to make one stop. You are also allowed to buy beer and alcohol on Sundays, but most places usually close around 5pm on Sundays.
Summit County is also home to a number of great, smaller breweries, so if you are a beer lover, make sure to plan a stop at at least one of the breweries. Dillon Dam Brewery, Pug Ryan’s and Baker’s Brewery are all located in the Dillon / Silverthorne area which is just 7 miles from Keystone Resort, near I-70. You can also checkout the Outer Range Brewery in Frisco or head to Breckenridge and check out the Breckenridge Brewery or Broken Compass Brewery.
Looking for a cold beer, après-style? The Last Lift Bar is a locals favorite for a cold beer after the mountain or on your lunch break. The Last Lift is located at the Mountain House Base Area and has an awesome upper level patio for those nice sunny days, watching skiers come down the mountain. Another favorite is LaBonte’s Cabin on North Peak, complete with Adirondack Chairs for sun basking and taking a break during your ski day. In River Run Village, check out Kickapoo Tavern, New Moon Cafe or 9280′ Taphouse for a great Colorado beer on draft.
Don’t say we didn’t clue you in on the best place to get your local craft Colorado beer on your Keystone ski trip! Be safe and have fun!
